Bosnian prosecution confirms “Safari” case opened over alleged foreign mercenaries in Sarajevo

The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed to N1 that it opened a case known as “Safari” back in 2022, based on a report filed by former Sarajevo mayor Benjamina Karic.

The case involves allegations that Italian nationals paid to travel to Sarajevo during the city’s siege, between 1992 and 1994, in order to kill civilians on its streets.
“The case is active, and a prosecutorial decision has not yet been made. The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has not been contacted by judicial institutions in Italy regarding this matter,” they told N1.
As previously reported, Italian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the case.
The story gained attention in Italy and internationally after journalist Ezio Gavazzeni submitted documents and testimonies to the Milan Prosecutor’s Office following years of independent investigation.
In an exclusive interview with N1, Gavazzeni said that, in addition to Italian citizens, the case materials also mention Americans, Canadians, and Russians who allegedly took part in or were connected to the “Safari” operation.
The investigation sheds new light on one of the most disturbing alleged episodes of the Siege of Sarajevo, raising questions about the participation of foreign nationals who reportedly treated the war zone as a form of “paid hunting ground.”
While the Bosnian Prosecutor’s Office has not yet reached a formal decision, the growing involvement of Italian authorities could lead to deeper international cooperation in clarifying the full scope and responsibility for the alleged war crimes committed under the so-called “Safari” operation.
